The combination of specialized technology, global expertise, a strong safety culture, and deep operational knowledge has enabled DMC Mining Services to establish itself as a trusted partner in Chile, one of the world’s most competitive and demanding mining markets.
What began in 2019 with a team of just eight people has grown into an organization of more than 1,600 employees in Chile, with operations at some of the industry’s most important underground deposits. “Our evolution reflects a journey from a small-scale operation to becoming a strategic partner for some of the industry’s most complex underground mining projects,” says Michal Jezioro, President & Managing Director of DMC Mining Services. DMC Mining Services, whose history began in Canada in 1980, currently offers a comprehensive portfolio of underground mining services, including horizontal and vertical development, shaft sinking, mine construction, engineering, drilling, and geological studies. Globally, the company has nearly 2,500 workers and a presence in nearly 40 projects worldwide, seven of which are located in Chile.
Mechanization of Critical Processes
Among the main factors behind DMC’s growth are its highly qualified team and its ability to combine proven technology with continuous innovation. The company deploys proven technologies while continuously exploring new solutions to enhance safety, productivity, and operational efficiency. A clear example is its investment in mechanized mining methods that improve performance while reducing personnel exposure to risk. The adoption of Boxholetechnology has enabled vertical development to be executed more safely and efficiently, while reducing personnel exposure in high-risk areas.
In addition, DMC’s investment in modern, high-performance equipment such as BBM and BBR systems allows the company to mechanize critical processes, improving precision, efficiency, and performance in highly complex underground projects.
“These technologies enable safe and efficient vertical development while minimizing personnel exposure to high-risk areas. Operators control the excavation process from protected workstations rather than being positioned at the face during critical stages of development,” says Jezioro. The company also has international experience with Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) technology, used for mechanized shaft sinking. Although this solution has not yet been implemented in Chile, it could represent a new technological leap for the region.
A Safety-First Culture
Safety is a principle embedded throughout DMC’s operations and corporate strategy. The company stands out for maintaining one of the lowest accident rates since the start of its operations in Chile — the result of a solid and deeply rooted preventive culture. “Safety is not just a performance metric; it is a core value that guides each of our decisions and activities in the field,” says Jezioro. This philosophy is complemented by rigorous planning, ongoing risk assessment, continuous training, and the incorporation of digital tools that allow real-time monitoring of people, equipment, and the entire process. One example is MineWatch, a system implemented together with Codelco to improve operational visibility and facilitate decision-making through shared information between client and contractor. “The pilot showed that operational transparency is a key factor in improving performance. Working with real-time data makes it possible to anticipate deviations and better coordinate resources,” notes Oscar Lira, VP, LATAM.
Major Contracts
Among the company’s most significant milestones in Chile, Michal Jezioro highlights the award of contracts with leading mining companies such as Sierra Gorda, Codelco’s El Teniente Division, and, more recently, Lundin Mining. “Each of these awards reflects the dedication, expertise, and ongoing commitment of our teams, as well as the trust our clients place in our operational and technical capabilities.” He notes that these contracts have not only strengthened the company’s position in the sector, but have also enabled DMC to expand its operations, invest in new equipment, establish permanent facilities in strategic mining regions, and maintain sustained annual growth in Chile. In the case of Lundin Mining in particular, the two contracts at the Candelaria Mine in the Atacama Region involve lateral development alongside specialized ground support and reinforcement of existing underground infrastructure. These awards represent far more than an expansion of the company’s project portfolio.
“They strengthen our role as a trusted partner for complex underground mining projects while supporting our long-term growth strategy in Chile,” says Oscar Lira.
Favorable Outlook
In addition to its operational growth, DMC expects to have a significant impact on employment, training, and the incorporation of new technologies, consolidating a permanent presence in one of the country’s most important mining regions. 2025 was marked by the expansion of operations, the strengthening of regional infrastructure, and the incorporation of new mechanized equipment — and the outlook for the coming years is favorable. The expected growth in demand for copper and lithium, driven by the energy transition and electrification, opens up new opportunities for underground mining. “We view the Chilean market with confidence. The challenges related to safety, productivity, and sustainability create room for companies with robust technical capabilities, innovative solutions, and a collaborative way of working,” adds Jezioro.
Integrated Contracting Model
In its engagement with major mining companies, DMC Mining Services applies an end-to-end integrated contracting model that combines technical strength, operational flexibility, and highly collaborative execution. “We operate under a design-build approach and have the technical and management capabilities required to develop projects under EPC and EPCM models, adapting to each client’s objectives, requirements, and desired level of involvement,” highlights Michal Jezioro, President & Managing Director of the company. “What sets our model apart is the way we integrate with the client. We do not limit ourselves to executing a project or providing a specific service; we seek to understand their operational challenges, adapt to their needs in the field, and maintain transparent communication throughout the project life cycle.
